Infantry Division Banner, Korea, Theatre Made |
 |
1PWE-1. In
June 1950 when North Korea attacked South Korea elements of the 24th
Infantry Division were the first units to arrive in Korea. The 24th
Infantry Division fought a delaying action against overwhelming odds,
which permitted the United Nations to build up its forces near Pusan South
Korea; for their heroic actions the Division was awarded the Presidential
Citation. For the following nineteen months the Division fought in seven
campaigns and was decorated, twice, by the Government of South Korea. In
February 1952 the 24th Infantry Division departed for Japan
where it served as part of the Far East Reserve. In July 1953 the Division
returned to Korea to restore order in prisoner of war camps. In 1954 the
Division returned to Japan and was stationed there until February 1955
when it returned to Korea for an aditional tour of duty.
The 24th Infantry division left Korea in 1957 when the United
States reduced and realigned its Divisions in the Far East. This banner
has the distinct appearance of those souvenirs made in Japan during the
units stay there. Approximately 11-5/8-inch wide x 17-inch high, two
sided, swallow tail, banner constructed from black satin material, which
has a slight, deep purple, iridescence. The multi-color central design
depicts a beautiful, 5-inch diameter, rendition of the unique shoulder
patch of the 24th Infantry Division, consisting of a green
satin taro leaf with a yellow/gold embroidered border separately applied
onto a red satin circular field with a black and yellow gold border, which
is beautifully applied onto the black satin banner. The units nickname,
the “Victory Division,” is tightly embroidered, using yellow/gold
thread, above and below the patch. This is a double-sided banner where the
front and back side are exactly the same; the top edge has double cotton
ties on each corner and it is quite evident that both sides were intended
to be seen at the same time; it may have been used as a trumped banner or
used in another official recognition situation; the banner is expertly
constructed in the highest quality and appears to be something more than a
simple souvenir constructed for the average GI. The banner is wrinkled and
has horizontal lines from being folded for years, (nothing serious);
otherwise it’s in near excellent condition. A very unique item.
